hudson was sitting at home, cozied up on the couch with his little sister, rosa, only three years old. he was in the middle of his sister's favorite part, his mother watching with pride in her eyes, when there was a knock at the door. looking worried, his mother would get up and answer the door with shaking hands. a silver general handed her a note, nodded, before turning to leave.
the note was of the dreaded news no family wanted to hear; someone died in the war. and it was hudson's older sister, camila. she was tough. shed lasted three years. rosa had never met her, and never would. shed been captured by the other side of the war and tortured for information. she hadnt given in, after months, and she was killed.
the news hit the woode family hard. theyd already lost the father of the house, and now the elsest of the three children. rosa held onto ger mother, her wide tearful eyes distant and sad. she knew sonething was terribly wrong even though she didnt understand.
hudson left the house, heart heavy. camila was his role model. his best friend. she taugh him games, how to charm businessmen into letting him get off with their products for cheaper, shed taugh him how to be a kid. and now she was gone. he climbed down the ladder, tears streaming down his face, and sat, hugging his knees and leaning against the stilts of his house. /mobile

Ella had been walking, thinking, not exactly paying attention. She noticed Hudson, and approached him quietly. "You alright?" She asked gently.

Kristen had been walking and saw him as well. She hovered nearby, not wanting to crowd him, but also wanting to make sure he was okay.

he glanced up, trembling slightly, his normally bright and humorous blue eyes red and puffy from crying. "i-it's camila." he breathed. he shook his head. "she's gone."

Kristen stepped closer to him comfortingly. "I'm so sorry," she murmured. She'd seen Camila around the town a bit a few years ago, and had always sort of admired her. "Was she your sister?" she asked gently.

he nodded. "y-yeah. she was in the war for three years. she was tough," he murmured, just thinking hard about her laugh, her face, her smile, her hair, her stance. he didn't want to forget her. he needed to know her like the back of his hand, so he could talk about her to rosa.

She resisted the weird urge to squeeze his hand. "I'm so sorry," she repeated, then, deciding to actually talk a bit more for once, said, "I- I saw her around town a few times, back before she was conscripted. She seemed so nice."

Ella nodded with empathy. Her brother was in the war as well. "I'm sorry," she murmured.

he nodded, glancing up at the two for a moment before his gaze found his feet. "yeah. she always charmed other reds into giving her things for cheaper," he said, tiny smile tugging at one side of his lips.

She smiled, glad that he was smiling- even if only a little.
